“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold:  when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”  ~Charles Dickens

I must get outside today.

It hasn’t rained for two days, and the ground is no longer so wet that I must avoid working in it.  Onion sets are ready to plant, as are the broccoli transplants and the remaining half-dozen cabbages.  But still, this deadline for work hovers in my consciousness, and I know I’ll have to limit other activities to make it into the garden.

It’s too bad, really.  I had a wonderful idea for a post last night just before falling asleep.  But I’ve written the gist of it down, so we’ll get to it.

Meanwhile, I do hope you enjoy the photographs.  You may click on either one to see it enlarged to full size, and in my opinion both are worth it.  Both were taken on the same day, the first in a bright sunbeam with a hint of summery weight to it already, and the one below captured in the cool, dappled shade where one feels the need of a jacket still.

The photos are so pretty! It felt like that here today – sunny, but cold. But, oh, is that sunshine welcome!

Hope Mother Nature co-operates for your planting and that you and F. have a fabulous weekend.

I love the red/orange-ness of that first picture.

That’s a great Dickens’ quote too. He’s one of my favorite authors :-)

Me, too, Alisha, especially when contrasted with the dark green/bluish blob in the background. :)

I’m not too fond of Dickens anymore, for some reason. But he does have great lines for quotes!

Oh, what pretty photographs! I think it’s great that you garden. I need to learn how…or, more I need to learn how not to kill the garden. LoL

  4. Lovely witchhazel Meredith, such a vibrant color! Isn’t it nice to see the sun? Although, we have more rain here tomorrow, but then it’s looking like fair weather for us for a while. I hope your sunshine sticks around for a bit. I can’t wait to get out in the garden either!

We’ve got the best 10-day forecast I’ve seen in months, CV. It’s got me so excited I can hardly sit still; I’m sure you’re in the same boat! :)

Here it’s still too cool to consider the deck gardening! Maybe the hardened snow leftovers will melt in the 40Fs tomorrow tho-

Dear Meredith, How absolutley right you are. Spring has at least two faces, but the sunshine even with a chill in the air is very welcome.

Great picture of the witch hazel! Congratulations on your new site…looks great!

  8. Your post can wait; go do the garden!

I love the quote; it so sums up today here. My father used to describe these days as being like a loose woman; she lures you in with her brightness, and slaps your face with her stinging coldness.

That said, he was a bit of a mentalist!

So true, IG. I’m thinking right about now might be the time for me to break with my post-every-day format, or at least not hold myself to it so strictly. I feel infected with a wild, almost feverish energy, excitement, and desire to get outside in it… I bet this will soon be affecting all of us in the Northern Hemisphere. Mass joy. :)
