“The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”

~Henry Miller

It’s a day of pure joy.  When the wind blows and sets the whole green forest to dancing, I’m sure my soul can no longer fit within its boundaries, but must go out and share.

Do you know the feeling I’m talking about?

I have so much for which to be grateful.  Today I have:

- shared an eye-glance with the first hummingbird of the season

- tucked dried lavender from my own garden into a letter to a friend

- said goodbye to the violas who bloomed so sweetly all winter, when I especially needed it

- visited an ethnic grocery store and tried to guess the uses of exotic spices

- accepted a haphazard bouquet of dandelions from F.’s hand (for our dinner salads)

- organized my photo archives and delighted in my developing skill

- decided potato sprouts are quite lovely, really

- watched the storm clouds roll in, pewter and petulant

- held Leo next to my heart, absorbing his rumbling purr

- written to you!

Surely this is more riches than any one person could ever deserve.

What about you?  Is there anything you’re feeling grateful for today?

Ahhh, yes – there is so much to be grateful for! I am home from work with a cold today but in a way it’s a blessing. I sat quietly at the sun room window and watched the birds, taking a few pictures as I did and then posting them on my blog. I’ve had time to browse through more garden blogs than I would in an ordinary day. I napped and woke to the sound of the birds singing.
I try to take the time every few days to record some of my many blessings at http://theblessingbowl.blogspot.com/

  6. A love post Meredith! Yes, today, I’m very grateful it’s raining…really I am. We had a lovely dry and sunny spell, but the orchard and garden were drying out. At least with today’s rain, we don’t have to water the plants.

Oh, I know that feeling, Clare! When our rains finally came this weekend, it had been over two weeks dry — and the garden and I both felt refreshed and restored. I’m sure your orchard is now glowing with health. :)

Well, I needed to read this after a very stressful day, in the midst of which my thoughts were not quite so ingratiating. Thanks for the reminder to be grateful for the little blessings in life!

I was on the road all day today and spoke to three beloved family members (with one of those hands free devices) – I am grateful for a wonderful and loving family. I got to see lots of green growth and wildflowers by the side of the road. And experienced an impromptu concert – more about that on my blog tomorrow.

  9. I love that Miller quote Meredith and your eye glance with a hummer. Lovely post! I am thankful for the cool weather that is keeping Spring’s beauty young and for antibiotics … knowing I will be more thankful later on. ;>)

I was pretty thrilled with the hummingbird’s visit, Carol. He came right up to the window my desk faces, and I heard the buzz of his wee wings as he approached — and the weird part is, there is *nothing* there for him to eat, nothing of interest at all. I think he just wanted to make eye contact after his long absence. ;)

You are worrying me with not getting well by now, dear Carol. I’m sending you some healing energy right now.

I’m grateful for friends (virtual ones too :) ), one last cold front taking the humidity out of the air, delicious coffee, my wonderful pets, an abundance of good books to read, and so many other things. Life is good!

    • Meredith says:

Amen for virtual friends. You are one, you know. :)

This cold front is a bit weird for me (the extra blankets and space heaters are already put up for the year, and I was ready to move on to the clothes!), so I’m glad someone is enjoying it. You do have a good life, Kathy, and it’s so wonderfully evident in your writing.

  11. Sylvana says:

That is a great list. It is so easy to forget how wonderful each day is.

Today saw my brussel sprouts sprouting, I got my onions planted, I shared some of my soup with my dog, and I found a tulip only half planted in the soil but blooming its heart out.

It is easy to forget, Sylvana, and I’m not sure why that should be so. Maybe it’s too easy?

Your gratitude list is lovely. I especially love the soup shared between friends. ;)

  13. I love that description, “pewter and petulant”. I always think of storms clouds spreading like a bruise on the belly of the sky!

By the by, I am working on my ten things; I’m not ignoring them, but I want things that won’t be too obvious (or get me arrested)!

Thank you, IG. The metaphor of the spreading bruise is wonderfully evocative.

I definitely wouldn’t want you arrested — although now, of course, I’m more curious than ever to read your award-acceptance post. ;)

What a beautiful and thought-provoking post!

I am grateful today for the roof over my head, the food in the frig and in the garden, and for my good health. And I am thankful I get to share my daily experiences with the love of my life, my wife. I try and count my blessings every day.

  15. I am grateful for my little loving family and for having some little tomatoes from which I may be able to save some seeds and set of on another journey of learning :)
Thanks for some inspiration to think about the good things Meredith!

    • Meredith says:

Yay for the tomatoes, Heidi! I do hope the ones in the bags ripened up enough to eat by now. (And I hope you read carefully about how to save tomato seeds; it’s not as obvious and simple as it may seem at first glance. I’ll send you a wee e-mail heads-up, just to be sure.)

I’m glad you enjoyed the post. :D

      • Hi again Meredith – I have been doing a little homework and I can see what you mean! Probably not a good place for a beginner to start, but I am going to give it a go anyway just for the learning experience. If I have any success that will be an added benefit!

        • Meredith says:

Oh, definitely give it a go, Heidi! I suspect you’ll do it just right. I was definitely not trying to be discouraging — just didn’t want you to waste those Tommy Toes. ;)

I was surprised a couple of seasons ago to realize how complicated the seed saving regimen is for tomatoes. I’ve stuck to saving seed for easier varieties so far, myself, like cardinal climber and beans.
