"The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”
~Henry Miller
It’s a day of pure joy. When the wind blows and sets the whole green forest to dancing, I’m sure my soul can no longer fit within its boundaries, but must go out and share.
Do you know the feeling I’m talking about?
(from "riches", April 2010)

While that question is probably a little difficult to answer in a paragraph (or even in a lifetime), I can tell you that my name is Meredith, and that I love to ponder life's mystery and beauty and joys and then write about them. This blog is all about my interactions with Nature during my walks in the woods, visits to Botanical Gardens, in my own small, organic kitchen garden -- and anywhere else I happen to be when inspiration strikes.

That looks like a lovely shady spot to spend a warm (almost) summer afternoon.
Curbstone Valley Farm´s last blog ..The Chicken Run
Well, it’s a nice shady spot to pass beneath on a hike. Let’s say that, Clare. I wouldn’t want to spend all afternoon there: even in the shade it was rather hot for my taste.
No you can’t take it with you.
Only relive it in dreams and memories
For was yesterday really here
Nice thought for the day.

I’m glad you liked it, Ellis!
Wise words indeed. Methinks I may have to read some Annie Dillard. She came highly recommended by one of my favourite authors, Philip Yancey, and now I see her quoted in an enchanted word garden… hmmm. What am I waiting for?
I can add my recommendation to Mr. Yancey’s, Tony. My favorite of hers is For The Time Being. But many people prefer to start with her Pulitzer-prize winner, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.
Maybe you’ll dive in to one of them on some lazy afternoon!
Great quote, Meredith!
Jean´s last blog ..In Praise of Siberian Irises
I can’t take any credit, Jean.
LOVE that quote — and what a perfect spot to spend said afternoon.

Nancy Bond´s last blog ..Day Puts On Its Jacket
Oh, I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Nancy. You seem to be a quote connoisseur, so I think you know wherefore you speak!
Absolutely, positively the BEST gardening advice one can receive, Meredith. The older I get the more fleeting the minutes seem to be and since now is all we have we’d better enjoy it.
Advice for living, too, I guess, Grace. (Does it also seem as you get older that life lessons lurk in the garden everywhere?
)
Such true words. Gorgeous shot, Meredith! Looks like a great place to curl up under with a good book or a good companion

Talon´s last blog ..The Simple Goodbye
That shot made me think of that precisely, Talon, of curling up with F. on a bed of soft fallen leaves from last November, maybe whispering sweet nothings.
Annie was so right.
Lovely shot looking through the leaves.
Lynn´s last blog ..Poppies, just plain delicious and lingering
I’m glad you like it, too, Lynn.
No matter how many times I see the term, ‘Carpe Diem’ always resonates!
The Annie Dillard quote I was not familiar with…. but she seems to sum it up perfectly.
Hope you’re having a great day!

Carpe Diem — can there be any better advice?
Well, okay. Maybe “love thy neighbor as thyself.” Still, it’s pretty high on my list!
Looks like a lovely spot to spend a lazy afternoon. Makes me want to lie on a blanket and look up at the sky through the leaves…
Kathy´s last blog .."See the Bullet Hole"–The Birth and Death of an Outlaw
I would totally sit on that blanket with you, Kathy — if it were about 15 degrees cooler.
They seem such simple words, if only I could follow them!
Heidi (GippyGardener)´s last blog ..My Garden Bouquet (MGB) for June – Winter White
Heidi, you’re definitely not the only one to struggle with this! Hugs, my friend.
Such a simple shot, and simple words to go with it, but so poignant too!
The Idiot Gardener´s last blog ..Glut, be gone (the Rocket solution)
IG, simple and to the point was all I could manage in my heat-and-humidity-induced haze. I seem to have trouble getting up the energy to write a standard post at this point. Perhaps I’ll have some new brilliant idea when the heatwave breaks. Until then, I’ll be satisfied with “simple” and “poignant.”
Very nice! Green lace. I love green color so much! Even now when it’s raining every day, the greenery is making me happy. It’s so bright, fresh, intense and not faded by sun.
Tatyana@MySecretGarden´s last blog ..Enchanted Garden Of A Hosta Hybridizer
Very poetic, Tatyana. I never thought of it as green lace before.
I do love the greenish light that comes spilling through the stained-glass canopy this time of year.
I’m glad you’re getting all that magical, enlivening rain!
What a great quote and photograph – combined loveliness.
I remember the canopies of deciduous trees when I was walking through the woods to my social work practicum in North Carolina. Not very common here – elegant, truly elegant.
Patricia, I honestly had not thought of that shot as anything but common until you said that. It would be hard for me to live where I couldn’t look up and see the forest canopy fairly often!
Simply beautiful, Meredith!
