“Why always ‘not yet’?  Do flowers in spring say ‘not yet’?”

~Norman Douglas

No.  Although flowers in winter, dormant or still only a sleeping seed’s dream, may say “not yet.”  They might not be ready yet.  But the great wheel will turn and their time will come around again.

Coneflower center.

It really is never too late to act on your dreams.

So you haven’t done it yet.  So what?  That sleeping seed’s dream within you is still precious, and the flower you envision may yet open from within you.  It may have needed to wait until conditions were just right.

I just felt that someone out there needed this reminder today.

And if that someone isn’t you, well… I hope you enjoy the photos of the coneflowers, at least.

Coneflowers and tall green foliage.

Namasté, y’all!

    Dreams are my make-believe future
My lifeline to sanity, a place of safety,
A hidey-hole from this reality of mine
Do I give them up and fall into that
Black abyss of madness or cling to them
As if they were my untended soul

I don’t think we can ever *really* give up our dreams, Ellis. And I only say that because I have tried it — and ended up with one foot dangling over that “black abyss” you mention, but my dreams still intact… just suppressed.

      May your dreams come true!

  2. It may not be me directly, today, but actually, I tend to always have at least one dream in waiting…a good reminder. The only dreams wasted are those not pursued…

You know, Gemma, you have really strong energy. I could feel it from all the way over here on the other side of the continent. ;)

I wish you firm handholds on that dragon, my friend…

It might be quite impossible for me to describe how jealous I am that you, apparently, have rain. Here in NC, we are on the verge of a drought, and my coneflowers (and pumpkins, and grass, and cukes, and every other growing thing) are in dire need of some cloud-borne love.

Very happy for you that your efforts are being rewarded.

    • Meredith says:

Crabby Goat, you’d be wrong, unfortunately. We entered a drought two weeks ago — again. :( It’s the lowest level drought, but still, it’s been rough here. Those photos were taken not in my yard, but at the SC Botanical Garden (I almost always give credit, but I felt it detracted from the central message today), where they have a lovely irrigation system that I can only dream of. We’re resorting to the hose here, too, and the garden is droopy.

Next time I do a rain dance, I’ll send some of my energies up to NC!

That is so wise, Raul. But I must add that even if we throw our hands up in despair and believe for a while that it’s too late… the moment we decide to open the door a crack to doubt, to possibility, we may be rejuvenated again. :D

I definitely needed this reminder to day – I rather took the day off to just read a nice novel and stay out of the heat…
Now to defend myself, I did walk and pick the blueberries and do hours of watering this morning….I find it hard to keep goals and dreams in mind when the garden and house are in such need of care this time of the year….I am eating all those good things too….need those good things for winter substance too but they are not dreams and wishes

  10. I spend every day making my dreams a reality. That said, it’s so much easier when your dreams are “finish bottling the home-made beer”, “tile the bathroom”, “eat some pork” and “pick more squash”.

Some call it zen; some say its satisfaction; I call it an acceptance of the order of things. If I was born for greatness, I might have twigged it by now.

Actually, IG, that is one of my secrets for a joyful life. Focus in on what you can do now that you enjoy doing. Or focus on what you are doing, focus in to such an extent that you get joy from it, from picking squash, for instance.

That said, if “tile the bathroom” was on my list, I’d be in trouble. ;) Doesn’t look so simple from here…

  12. Tony Single says:

Okay, gonna own up on this one… how did you know? :P

    • Meredith says:

Ah ha! So it’s not just coming from out West. That must be a powerful dream, for the longing to have reached across the oceans…

May your dream(s) come true, Tony!

  13. Actually, Meredith, sometimes the flowers in Spring do say “not yet.” Mine certainly did when I longed for them to bloom and air was cold and chilled. And when the sun finally came to warm the earth, great anticipation filled my heart as I watched… and waited… and then the snow fell again. “Not yet” the tender plants whispered to me, “be patient.” And so I was… and after what seemed like forever, the blossoms finaly bloomed and they were glorious! Hmmm… perhaps there are times when we simply need to be patient? Lovely post, Meredith, you invited my muse to peek out from the closet. :)

You are right, Carolyn! Just because our flowers here in South Carolina couldn’t hold it in until the end of February doesn’t mean it’s that way everywhere — or that it’s even that way here all the time. So glad I could get your muse to give us a quick wave. Wish we could convince her it’s safe to come out more often!

Patience is definitely an underrated virtue, in many spheres. I’m working on my own, you know. ;)

    • Meredith says:

Well, Kathy, I know I do. I have lots of dreams, and it is easy to look at what little I’ve accomplished so far and get discouraged.

It’s also easy to look at it from another angle, though, and ponder, gee, I got to do all those wonderful things, I got to bring that corner or snippet of my vision into the world, I got to share with all these beautiful people. And then perspective is restored. :D

  16. One says:

Hi Meredith, Just to share with you, I am acting on my dreams. I moved away from an apartment a few years ago so that I am surrounded by greenery and am able to do gardening. I started blogging and making friends with other nature lovers who talk the same language. It all feel so right. I am grateful. When I read your posts and your comments, you seem ‘angelic’ to me. I hope to be able to articulate as well as you someday. :)

I’m so glad for you, dear One. You are already expressing yourself beautifully! It is so important to follow your intuition and act on the dreams of your heart. Nature will always be a part of my life dreams, as well. :)

As for me being “angelic,” well, now I’m blushing because no, that’s not true. I have a dark side like every human being, and I spent many years subsumed in it. We are all potential angels to one another, though, if we practice kindness…

  17. Teresa O says:

Lovely post, Meredith. I’ve had dreams come true and then dissipate only to be replaced by new ones. Someone I admire greatly suggested to me that I do everything within my power to make the true dreams, the ones that never go away, a reality. It can be a tough road to follow, but the rewards out distance the obstacles and make life joyful.

    Have a wonderful day!

    • Meredith says:

Teresa, I think that you have pointed out an important part of the picture!

I have dreams that are still alive now, over 30 years after I first recognized them in my heart. But many of my “dreams” turned out to be nothing more than temporary urges, wishes of the moment, or fantasies inspired by the culture’s non-stop commercial. All of them flitting by faster than butterflies, on their way to someone else perhaps…

  18. This is a wonderful reminder – and sometimes it is that the dream (our bloom) is not going to take the form we want… and it will be that much more beautiful when it is our time.
So what of those people who don’t take the risk to fulfill their dream – it is not a “not yet” but a letting go.
