Butterfly staring at me.

Joy all creatures drink
At nature’s bosom…

~Friedrich von Schiller, “Ode to Joy,” 1785, translated from the German

    Meredith,
Lovely thoughts for a beautiful morning. Enjoyed the photo too! More tiger swallowtails around here than we have seen for years!

    • Meredith says:

Randy, we have had more than usual, as well, and lots of Red-Spotted Purples, too — but I put it down to the addition of our new butterfly bush. :D

Butterfly: “Take a picture. It’ll last longer!” :P

  4. Kathy says:

OK, how did you get a photo of a butterfly’s EYES??? Amazing.

Kathy, I really have no idea. Can I tell you I was pouring sweat and could not see the screen of my digital camera in the blazing sun at that moment? I had already been out far too long. This was an outing on which the focus of my camera started behaving erratically, too — because it got overheated! Still, I met his eyes and knew he was inviting me to take the shot.

      What can I say? Serendipity.

    • Meredith says:

Christina, I’m sure you would have been in alt in this garden I visited (more about that tomorrow). It was all a-flutter, everywhere you looked. I counted 9 different butterfly varieties — only managed pictures of 3, of course. ;)

    Hi Meredith,

I like how the other flowers show in the background; the butterfly over the flower is a great shot, but the others, out of focus yet there, give much more color and life to the picture.

    • Meredith says:

Raul, that’s a favorite photo style of mine, picked it up just this spring by accident. Whenever there are multiples of the same or similar items in a shot, whether it’s bean vines, flowers, yarn skeins or fence posts, grass blades or marbles, I like to focus intently on one in the foreground and let the ones in the background become just a colorful hint of so much more beyond what is experienced in that captured moment. I especially love it when the background gets some bokeh, which is pretty rare and difficult to achieve with a point-&-shoot — yet another reason for looking forward to the day when I can start learning to use a DSLR. ;)

      Glad you liked it!
