  1. Those white petals, touched with burgundy. What is that? Hickory dogwood azalea – they are all unknown to me?

Diana, those are dogwood blossoms. Dogwood, Cornus florida, is a small, native understory tree common in the forest here, but threatened by disease now in most of its northern range.

Sorry I didn’t think about the confusion inherent in a wordless Wednesday post like this! The others are a hickory tree (which I featured in the fall, when it turns a spectacular gold), a young Eastern redbud leaf (I did a series on this understory tree last year), and native azalea (I think Rhododendron calendulaceum), in that order.

Beautiful photos, Meredith. The dogwoods looked like someone came along and kissed the tip of each petal.

    Meredith,

I was about tell you how impressed I was that you still have dogwoods in bloom and then I read that your photos were taken in April.

These are stunning photos. It’s amazing the different shapes and colors that nature provides us. The last picture is my favorite. There’s much in it…the blue skies, the interesting flowers and the white azaleas ? Then again, those red-orange leaves also call to me. Beautiful shots.

Have a great weekend…I hope you get to enjoy your garden:~)

Looking up through the dogwood blossoms elicit sweet memories for me. Loved walking in the woods when we lived in Oregon where wild dogwoods thrive. Looking up through the canopy always captured my heart. Lovely photo Meredith.

It’s spring! I am constantly looking up this season.

By the way, I saw the plant in your header in the stand of pines near my house the other day and was absolutely delighted by it.

Dear Meredith, how are you? I know you are on a blogging sabbatical, but I figured I’d see if I can dig up some life over here. If not, I hope all is well, and you are enjoying our best fall ever. -Jess
